Exploring the Guzheng’s Potential in Neural Regulation

I. Live Demonstration: The Guzheng as a Neural Stimulus

Through this performance of Fisherman’s Song at Eventide, I aim to demonstrate the specific acoustic properties I wish to investigate:

  • Harmonic Decay: Each note’s natural fading mimics the physiological “winding down” required for deep sleep induction.
  • Impulsive Onsets: The sharp attack provides high-precision time-locking for Event-Related Potential (ERP) and MMN analysis.
  • Respiratory Rubato: Breath-driven tempo fluctuations offer a unique model to test the brain’s predictive coding during sleep onset.

II. Areas of Research Interest for Collaboration

I am eager to engage with the scientific community to explore the following areas:

  • Predictive Coding & Cultural Constraints: Investigating how cultural familiarity modulates auditory processing during sleep. Specifically, whether the “novelty” of Guzheng’s rhythms triggers excessive MMN responses in non-native subjects (e.g., Westerners), potentially interfering with the N2 to N3 transition.
  • Closed-Loop Dynamic Induction: Exploring the use of real-time physiological feedback (HRV/EEG) to dynamically trigger Guzheng stimuli to optimize deep sleep maintenance.
  • Technological Implementation via SLUMBER: I am looking to integrate professional Guzheng performance into the SLUMBER framework for home-based, ecological sleep monitoring and neuroscience initiatives.
